New Labour's worst jobless total was announced on the same day as Jaguar axed 300 jobs at their Merseyside factory. Unemployment  has risen to almost 2.4 million it was announced on July 15.

Job losses rose by 281,000 in the three months to May, the biggest quarterly increase on record, taking the total to 2.38 million, the highest since 1995.  The number of people claiming Job Seeker's Allowance increased by 23,800 in June to 1.56  million, the worst total since Labour came to power in 1997.

The regions worst hit were north-east England, Yorkshire and Humber, north-west England and London.

Solidarity Executive member David Kerr commented:-

"At a time when unemployment is rising the Government is planning savage cuts in public services. People are paying a terrible price for the bankers recession. The NuLab Government will turn the recession into a depression if they continue with their present neo-liberal agenda. More than ever people need fighting Unions prepared to defend jobs and incomes. Those not already members must sign-up and organise."
