04/04/2010 - Pay Freeze for Local Government workers PDF Print E-mail

Council staff - such as home carers, nursery and school meals workers, teaching assistants and librarians are facing a pay-freeze. The Tory dominated Local Government Association (LGA) wants to ensure that they get no pay rise this year. They've refused to even talk with the workers' union reps about a pay rise. This is despite central government handing councils an above inflation 4 per cent grant increase for 2010.

Two thirds of local government workers already earn less than £18,000 so the pay-freeze is hitting hard. The Tories, nationally, have already threatend a pay-freeze next year too.

Solidarity has called for workers to indicate their anger and rejection of planned job and wage cuts in the run-up to the General Election.

I work for Sheffield City Council. We have been affected by pay and grading issues where the lowest paid have taken a masive pay cut and the management and supervisors have taken a rise of thousands. We have also had our pay frozen, which mean we are taking another pay cut. I have just joined this union and I'm going to try and get my fellow workers to join.

Hey Gurnstar -

I'm with you 100% on this one. I've heard of some places giving the very top bosses 'performance related' packages. This is on top of their (already huge) salaries, share options and so on.

Yet the only way these very senior members of staff can meet their performance related targets is if the junior staff produce more in less time.

That's ok if the junior staff are getting some sort of reward or recognition for the extra work they put in. But that never seems to happen, does it?

As usual, the big bosses get the big payouts, whilst the junior staff are lucky to get a thank you. The 'trickle' down of wealth that the capitalists always prattle on about never seems to reach the ordinary worker!
