NHS bosses had pay rises last year which were more than double of those offered to nursing staff. Chief executives got a handsome 6.9 per cent pay increase in 2008/09. This was from a base of an average annual pay of £147,500.
In stark comparison nurses got a rise of just 2.5. This from a much lower base - most nurses earn between £13,000 and £16,000 a year.
The Income Data Services Boardroom Pay Report 2010 was compiled using figures from more than 380 NHS trusts in England, including primary care, mental health and ambulance trusts.
The report fingered London's Guy's and St Thomas' chief executive Ron Kerr as Britain's biggest NHS earner with an income of £270,000.
Reading about these vast inequalities in pay really gets on my wick. I'm not opposed to people earning a good wage, but this is bang out of order.

Maybe we should support a system whereby senior staff can only earn, say, up to three times the salary of junior staff. I'm sure I've read that this is the way the Mondragon Co-Operative (in the Basque Country) works.
